One of our members, Evelyn Sullivan, invited us to have a visit to Saxtead Mill. The Mill is owned by her husband Nathan’s family. We chose the last Bank holiday Monday in May as English Heritage, who look after the Mill, don’t open on a Sunday. Some of our cars could park up at the Mill, as there was only room for six at a time. The others had to park at The Old Mill House Pub with was a little way down the road. Evelyn and Nathan had already got their Traveller out on display.
Nathan started off by telling members the history of his family’s ownership of the Mill which went back a few generations and how he now owns the Mill. His Uncle came out and also told us stories about the Mill. When a member of English Heritage came to open up, members were able to take a look around the Mill and some even braved the steps to the top. Many members gave donations for the upkeep of the Mill to which English Heritage has thanked us for.
Once we had a look round we walked over to The Old Mill Pub where we enjoyed lunch. Other Classic cars had been invited and there were a number of them parked up in the Pub car park. The lunch was enjoyed by members and family and there were 15 vehicles in total. We finished off a Football card for our fundraising and Brian Lloyd won £10, so well done to Brian. We thank Evelyn and Nathan for inviting us and their hospitality. We had a new member join us on the day too.
