At our March meeting we had a talk by Annie Chapman from the Pink Ladies Tractor Run. Annie began by telling us that her second car was a Morris Minor and she had had lots of them over the years. She started her talk by passing round an Olympic Torch that she had carried in 2012 along Aldeburgh sea front. It was quite heavy and she had to train to run the 300 meters required.
The Pink Ladies Tractor Run began in 2003 after Annie’s husband John suggested holding a ladies tractor road run. John is Chairman of the Suffolk and Norfolk David Brown Tractor Club. The first year there were 50 ladies and the run started at Pulham then on to Syleham for lunch and back to Pulham. It rained that year. On last years run they had 175 tractors that now include younger ladies on more modern tractors.
The run now starts at Thorpe Abbotts Air Museum where they have been since 2007. They then drive through Harleston on to Gawdy Hall where they stop for lunch and then is it back to Thorpe Abbotts. The first year the run raised £16,500 and last year they raised £127,500 and after 20 years this amounts to over £1,200,000. As the name suggests the ladies and tractors all dress up in pink.
Two of our members have taken part in the run over the years. Mary Huggins has taken part and Audrey Alexander has taken part since the first run. We hope to join them at the lunch stop at Gawdy Hall in July.
We celebrated the Branch’s 45th anniversary with some delicious cakes made for us by Mary. A raffle was held and we welcomed four new members to the meeting.
