We had a really good turn out at this meeting with a record 37 members attending. Firstly we presented a cheque to Peter Lawrence from The National Coastwatch Institution for our fundraising total of £600 that we had raised over the past year. Peter told us that the money would go towards the day to day running of their station at Cromer. We then went into the car park and had a photo shoot near two members Travellers by Andrew Stringer.
Then we were back in the warm, when another Branch member Dave Cragie gave us a slide show and talk on ‘The Alfred Corry Lifeboat Story, Southwold 1893’. There were photos from old Southwold and of the restoration of the Alfred Corry that was carried out by his family – Dad, Mum, brother and himself. Dave told us the history of the lifeboat from her time as a lifeboat at Southwold, then on to being a gentleman’s yacht and being renamed ‘Alba’. Then her time as a houseboat and then being purchased by his father and her name being returned to the ‘Alfred Corry’.
She is now housed in the harbour at Southwold in what was the old Cromer lifeboat station and is fully restored and is open to the public.
After refreshments we had a short meeting to see what events our members would like to go to this year. Then we had a raffle and finished off a football card left over from the New Year lunch. We raised £108 for our charity of this year the Pink Ladies Tractor Run. They hold a tractor run in July which raises money for Breast Cancer Research.
