11th August 2024 – Visit to Care Homes

Stephen Winkworth came up with the idea to take our Morris Minors to some Care Homes and organised everything for us. Here is Stephen’s report from the day.

Seven Minors, a P4 “Aunties Rover” and seven musicians rendezvoused at our first stop, Manson Care Home in Bury St Edmund’s. The cars were parked in the remote car park and the musicians set up shop in the summer house located within the garden. It w as a lovely English summers day and the cars all gleamed in the sunshine. The Musicians played a variety of instruments and all belong to the U3A Sudbury and are known as “Old Spice”. They got underway with a fine selection of traditional tunes from a variety of eras and a few residents made their way down to the Summer House. However, a few made it to the cars, given that the journey was difficult from the home to the cars. We chatted and had a cup of coffee in the beautiful gardens.

At about 11-30am we left for our lunch which was pre-ordered at the Woolpack public house near the second home at Fornham. After the group photo, the publican, Graham, invited us to our private room where we had a lovely lunch from an extensive pub menu along with a drink, which was well needed in the hot weather.

After lunch we travelled to Fornham Care Home where we were welcomed and invited to park in front of the main entrance where a number of residents were already seated outside enjoying a drink. A few viewed the cars and chatted whilst the musicians played their score. The staff were very enthusiastic and mingled with the residents and us serving refreshments and homemade cake.

The sun was intense and we had to stay under cover and that meant the band, residents and the car owners were spread out, but all appeared to have a good time, with many of the residents chatting freely.
